People in cities wanted food, and more people in more cities wanted more food.
Cities like Cincinnati made pork factories where they killed the pigs.
Lots of pigs.
In the 1830s, Cincinnati butchered nearly 500,000 hogs.
During the 1850s, Cincinnati butchered more than 2 million hogs.
By the 1870s, Cincinnati butchered 6 million hogs in just ten years.
So they called Cincinnati “Porkopolis.”
